Use of Emoticons on the backlog

I am confused by the use of the emoticons on the backlog. Are they just a visual indicator or have any other function. Please can you clarify

Statement from Kunagi Team

The emoticons were an early experiment. Unfortunately, they do not have clear semantics, so Teams are free to assign meanings to them.

We have been thinking about removing them altogether in the past, but it turns out that people actually do use them and by removing them we would take away this functionality.

There might be changes in the future, but for now they are just that: emoticons. In out Team, people mark stories with emoticons to "rate" them. This way. the Product Owner can tell from a quick glance, what Stories are preferred by the Team. This is not necessarily a helpful usage for a business, but in open-source development it's good.
