Pull next story greyed out

I just created a new project where I have assigned myself the role of Administrator, PO, SM and Developer. I created several user stories into the product backlog but when I went to split them into sprints, I just found I cannot do it because the 'Pull next story' button appears disabled.

I guess there is something missing in my project settings, but I couldn't figure out what yet.

To be able to pull stories using the button in the Whiteboard view, you need to have suitable Stories in your Product Backlog. Since you say that you have created some, my guess is that they probably have no estimation yet. Try assigning Story Point values to the ones at the top and check whether you can pull them then.
